In biblical times, linen was created from the flax plant through a laborious, mostly hand-driven process involving harvesting, retting (soaking), drying, beating, combing, spinning into thread with a drop-weighted spindle, and finally, weaving on a loom. Renowned for its strength and purity, it was primarily made by women and used for clothing, priestly garments, and burial cloths. The linen was bleached to a dazzling white by exposing it to sun and air, sometimes using natural alkali, to achieve the bright white color often associated with holiness and status.  Linen was highly prized, and fine, high-quality linen was often used by priests and royalty, symbolizing purity and wealth.
