'Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane'

Matthew 26: 36-41

In the last moments of Jesus life. He went to pray in the garden of Gethsemane. His sorrow was great and He was worried for all those He was about to leave behind. When He finishes praying and finds the disciples sleeping He makes a comment about them sleeping when He asked them to watch out for Him. He knew their spirits were strong but worried their flesh was weak despite their willingness to do what He had asked of them. Jesus obedience was first and foremost to His father to fulfil His purpose and return to Heaven, and despite His sorrow He prayed ‘Never the less, not as I will, but as you will’.

If we go back to Matthew 26:26 we see Jesus at the last supper that He had with the twelve disciples - As they were eating Jesus took the bread and praising God, gave thanks and asked Him to bless it to their use, and when He had broken it. He gave it to the disciples and said ‘take, eat, this is my body.’

Matthew 26:26 is the beginning of Jesus telling His disciples He is about to leave them. He takes the bread and tells the disciples ‘this is my body’ and says of the drink ‘this is the blood of the new covenant which is being poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.’ He goes on to say in 26: 29 ‘I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day comes when I will drink it with you in Heaven and it will be of excellent quality in my Fathers kingdom.’ 30 They then sing a hymn and go out to the Mount of Olives.

In Matthew 26:31 Jesus starts to explain to His disciples they will become offended, and stumble and fall away because of their distrust and desert Him and also says to them ‘But after I am raised up (to life again). I will go ahead of you to Galilee.’

If we look back at the old testament writings of Zechariah. Jesus is fulfilling what was written in Zechariah 13:7 approximately 520 years before His birth. Where it says: It is written that the Shepherd (Jesus) will be struck and the sheep of His flock (His disciples) shall scatter.

Back in Matthew 35, Peter expresses that he would never deny His Lord and Saviour and says He would never not trust and desert Him. Jesus goes on to tell Peter he will deny Him three times, but Peter insists along with the disciples they would never do this. Their spirits were strong in the Lord. They had loved Him with all their heart right from the beginning of His ministry.

36 Upon arriving at a place called Gethsemane. He tells His disciples to ‘sit down here while I go and pray’. 37 He began to feel grief and distress and was immensely sorrowful of Heart and He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, with Him. Jesus was grieving and said to them ‘my soul is very sad and I am deeply grieved almost to the point of death from sorrow.’ He then asked them ‘stay where you are and keep awake and keep watch with me’ He then moved along a little farther and throwing Himself on the ground on His face He prayed saying “ My Father, if it is at all possible, let this cup pass away from Me: never the less, not what I will, but as You will.

Jesus had been on this earth from birth, had lived with His people and enjoyed watching them grow with Him. He had grown to love them all. When He started His ministry at the age of thirty He taught them many things and had many followers. Both women and men. He was tempted by the devil without sinning, healed many from all sorts of afflictions and emotional distresses. He was loved by many and was kind and gracious to everyone He met along the way.

Jesus continuously talked about the Father and all the old testament writings and prophesies that had taken place and are still happening today in our world.

He had grown emotionally attached and through that love for His disciples and all peoples, including those that hated Him. He expresses to His father to, please take His pain away at the thought of not seeing them again for a while. This leads Jesus to say ‘let this cup pass away from me’ and at the same time with His own personal grief He acknowledges the Father and says ‘not what I will but as You will’. This moment was the greatest act of obedience to our Father in heaven.

When Jesus goes back to Peter and the two sons of Zebedee. He finds them asleep. He says to Peter ‘Are you unable to stay awake and keep watch with me for one hour?’ The reason why Jesus made this comment is because He realised that by the conversation He had had earlier with Peter and all the disciples, it showed that their spirit, was indeed willing to believe that they were faithful, but after they had fallen asleep it was clear to Jesus the flesh can be weak as well.

In Matthew 42 - 45 Jesus then went a further two times back to the Father praying ‘My Father, if this cannot pass by unless I drink it. Your will be done.’ Jesus was so committed to helping everyone to be reconciled with the Father that He put His own feelings aside and continued on with His obedience to get the will of the Father completed and save everyone both past and present.

It was immediately after this that Judas came with a group of especially wicked sinners whose nature was to act against God.

As Jesus was hanging on the cross His compassion was still amazing to witness. Before passing He uttered the words, ‘Forgive them Father for they know not what they do.’

Jesus was filled with hope and love coupled with strength and grace. He loved as we should love. Gave us words to motivate us and bring us closer to our Father in Heaven.

As promised He introduced us to Holy Spirit who helps us to make the right choices and decisions as we walk through our daily life. If you have not met the Holy Spirit before. He is mentioned in John 14:26 by Jesus Himself. He is your comforter (Counsellor or Helper, Your intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby.) The Holy Spirit whom the Father sent (in Jesus name to replace and represent Me and act on My behalf) He will teach you all things. And He will cause you to remembrance of everything I have told you.

To call upon Jesus and Holy Spirit is to connect with the Father. To read your bible is to open your mind to the beauty of the Lord Jesus’ love for us all. All meaning every last one of us. Any nationality or colour with the same level of love for us all. A love that surpasses our earthly understanding. ‘

Be kind and gracious and wiling to help whomever crosses your path. This is what Jesus asked of us and to ‘just believe’.
